I grew up in Point Hill, St. Catherine, Jamaica—a small country village tucked into the hills. I was raised alongside a sea of cousins; at one point, fourteen kids lived in a little house, and with neighborhood kids added to the mix, boredom was never an option.

I was raised collectively by aunts, uncles, and the community at large. When it came to teachings, feedings, and whoopings, everyone participated.

I wrote this book for my kids, their kids, and for anyone—young or old—curious about life in the countryside of a third-world country. Life in rural Jamaica and life in developed countries (“foreign,” as we call them back home) are drastically different, especially when you compare the childhoods of today’s kids to those of my generation.
This book is for anyone who has ever left home—and carried it with them anyway.
